Group: Utility Infrastructure

Position: Technician/Senior Technician

Location: Cleveland, OH, Columbus, OH, or Fort Wayne, IN (Position available in all locations)

 

Technicians work under the direction and mentoring of their Team Leader, producing CAD (computer-aided design) drawings for the Utility Infrastructure Group. Drawing content may include treatment plants, mechanical equipment, process piping, structures, site grading, drainage, pipeline plans and profiles, and maintenance of traffic.

 

Responsibilities include coordination with Project Managers and Engineers to illustrate engineering design concepts and details; aid in engineering analysis; use software proficiently; develop drawings following industry, company and group standards and practices; and operate plotting equipment to produce printed materials as required. Critical performance areas are accuracy, quality, completeness, and adherence to schedule.

Responsibilities

Technical/Administrative

  • Maintain and increase proficiency in software use (type dependent on available project types and workload needs, which may include: Revit, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, GIS)
  • Follow file management protocols for folder structure, file naming convention, storage location, submittal vaults
  • Provide graphics production support for Utility Infrastructure staff in all design centers as assigned
    • Graphics support (proposals, client/public meetings)
    • CAD drawing production (design documents, as-builts)
  • Assist with analysis tasks (quantities for earthwork, pavement, piping, drainage areas)
  • Assist with administrative duties (plotting, electronic file submission, and others as assigned)

Plan Development

  • Plan sheet creation
    • Index and sheet numbering
    • Import 3D models, CAD files, photos, spreadsheets, pdfs
    • Survey translation, existing TIN (triangular irregular networks), topographic notes, annotation, plotting
    • Labels (construction limits, right-of-way, structure call-outs, future, scale)
    • Alignments, plans and profiles
  • Proposed data
    • Notes, plans, profiles, cross-sections, construction details, data tables, dimensions
    • Correctly order elements on sheets (labeling, annotation)
    • Site grading, pavement, utilities, drainage structures, erosion control, maintenance of traffic
    • Buildings, hydraulic structures, mechanical equipment, process piping and appurtenances
      • Utility piping alignments
      • Develop clear design details from standards, example work and prior experience
    • Deliverables
      • Plot check sets to ensure all layers are included and that sheets are clean and legible (electronic or hardcopy)
      • Follow electronic file management and external file-sharing procedures

Quality

  • Follow Utility Infrastructure standards for drawing development, which may also incorporate:
    • DOT standard drawings and details and
    • Local standards for plan details and quantities/tables
    • Local utility standards
  • Recommend and help create aids to increase efficiency
  • Follow Utility Infrastructure electronic mark-up/checking procedures
    • Use pdf mark-up tools in Blue Beam Studio
    • Complete mark-ups with minimal direction
    • Track completed mark-ups
    • Assist Engineers with cross-check of other design disciplines
  • Follow document management standards for control of CAD data and archiving completed projects
    • Periodically check and clean-up drawing folders
    • Load and track files on ERMS (Electronic Records Management System)

 

Communications

  • Communicate and accept work assignments with a positive attitude
  • Time management
    • Coordinate all assigned tasks with Project Managers and Engineers (with assistance from Team Leader in task prioritization)
    • Understand what is required for each task (scope, deadlines, associated level of effort)
  • Communicate with team members regarding project information and task progress
  • Coordinate with other groups and subconsultants
  • Participate in internal meetings (project, training, administration) 

 

Training

  • Software (Revit, CAD, GIS, modeling software as applicable)
  • Technology (plotters)
  • Information management (filing, archiving, transmittals, correspondence)
  • Standards (drawing content, format, details)
  • Quality management (markups, review process)
  • Cross-training experience with other groups
  • Career development planning

 

Teaching (Senior Technician)

  • Ability to train CAD drafters and staff engineers on plan details
  • Open personality to handle any type of question or assignment
  • Assisting staff technicians and engineers in accomplishing tasks, especially QC/QA and mark-ups
  • Check accuracy on drawing sets

Qualifications

  • Associates degree or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years experience 
  • Technical knowledge of plan production methods used in the utility infrastructure engineering industry in Indiana
  • Demonstrated proficiency in CAD software (Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and/or Microstation)

Performance Measures

  • Amount and quality of design document production
  • Amount of collaboration with staff in other design centers

 

Performance Metrics (Technician)          

  1. Utilization rate goal of 90%
  2. Keeps records, paperwork, drawings and files organized as required for a project
  3. Completes assignments on time and able to set priorities when confronted with several “urgent” projects
  4. Possesses and demonstrates the technical/professional knowledge necessary to fulfill role; maintains competency in essential areas
  5. Explores alternative and innovative approaches to design problems before deciding on a course of action
  6. Works without excessive guidance on assigned tasks
  7. Accepts responsibility for work delegated to him/her with a positive attitude
  8. Observes office hours and policies; adheres to valid work schedule
  9. Reviews accuracy of work (drawings and computations) produced
  10. Cooperates with others as a member of the team; demonstrates ability to work together to achieve common goals
  11. Keeps up with in-house computer applications
  12. Attends seminars and courses to increase skills in relevant disciplines
  13. Refers potential employees to the company

 

Performance Metrics (Senior Technician)

Senior Technician typically has more than 10 years professional experience and shall have exhibited growth and increased independence and proficiency in all items listed above. Additional performance measures include:

 

  1. Mentors less experienced staff and/or assists with training efforts in the team/group
  2. Uses time wisely in order to reduce the risk of mistakes that come from squeezing too much work into too little time
