    Position: Senior Environmental Specialist/Geologist

    Location: Indianapolis, IN

     

    We are looking for a team oriented and energetic problem solver to become the next integral member of our environmental science team. This person will work directly with our experienced team of Project Managers, Geologists, Ecologists and Environmental Specialists on characterizing natural resources and documentation of potential environmental impacts on a diverse range of infrastructure projects.

    Responsibilities

    Project Development:

    • Assist in the preparation of proposals, fee justifications, and contracts for each project in conjunction with the Project Manager, Environmental Services Manager and Principal-in-Charge
    • Plan, direct, and coordinate technical aspects of assigned projects to ensure that goals or objectives of the project are accomplished within prescribed funding and schedule parameters
    • Assist in developing and executing project work plans for each project which includes essential elements of the project with major milestones and potential obstacles, the project schedule, and the financial plan that includes the project budget, a man-hour utilization forecast, and a revenue forecast
    • Assist Project Manager in coordinating assigned projects with the client, local government agencies, and permitting agencies as necessary to drive the project schedule.
    • As necessary, coordinate each project with other department’s schedules through the Project Manager and Environmental Services Manager. Ensure productivity and cooperation among the project team.
    • Coordinate each project with sub-consultant’s work schedules
    • As needed, serve as representative of firm at all required project meetings, presentations, and public hearings, and prepare documentation of items discussed
    • Perform an in-depth review of all the essential elements of each project and update the project work plan near the completion of each major milestone

    Technical Direction:

    • Direct and coordinate activities of environmental specialists, staff scientists and technicians to ensure projects progress on schedule and within prescribed budget
    • Mentor and provide direct hands-on assistance when teaching new environmental analyses, oral and writing skills to environmental specialists and staff scientists
    • Identify project obstacles and obtain assistance in resolving them
    • Stay current with environmental procedures, statutes, rules, guidance and policies
    • Attend seminars and continuing education to enhance skills in relevant disciplines
    • Direct and execute field data collection of soil, water, and other materials for environmental and natural resource surveys
    • Direct the collection and compilation of geographic information using global positioning system (GPS) equipment and geographic
    • Develop plans, specifications, technical reports and/or permit applications to document natural or human environment
    • Prepare maps utilizing geographic information system (GIS) software
    • Regularly coordinate with government agencies regarding regulatory requirements
    • Deliver presentations at public forums, conferences and client meetings

    Quality Assurance:

    • Organize the work of assigned project personnel to ensure that each project meets the highest professional standards, follows the established quality assurance plan, and maintains the established budget and schedule
    • Review interim draft and final reports, mapping, plans, specifications and computations prepared by environmental specialists, staff scientists and technicians for completeness and accuracy prior to every submittal
    • Review work that is performed by other departments and/or sub-consultants to insure satisfactory performance
    • Respond to regulatory agency comments and problems as quickly as possible

    Client Coordination and Business Development:

    • Maintain positive relationships with clients to resolve project questions such as project scope, environmental procedures, and schedule
    • Be responsive to all client requests
    • Assist in identifying new opportunities with existing and potential clients
    • Assist in development and writing of proposals for new business
    • Provide support for business development sales force

    Travel:

    • Limited travel required

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geology, Earth Science or other related field
    • Professional Geologist license (Indiana), or ability to obtain license within first year of employment
    • 7-10 years of relevant work experience in consulting or regulatory environment
    • Ability to work well and self-motivate in a collaborative team environment
    • Ability to work in variable conditions, including uneven ground and access to remote sites
    • Strong team player with effective internal & external communication skills
    • Experience with ArcView/ArcMap required
    • Experience with groundwater modeling software (e.g., MODFLOW) preferred
